Bay View Beach Cleanup

Overview:

Part of summer fun is a trip to the beach and we're lucky to have some great ones in the Milwaukee area! Unfortunately as traffic picks up at the parks and beaches, some trash is inevitably left behind. This is where Sunbeam Kids families can help! We will be heading down to Bay View Beach on Saturday, September 12th from 10:00-11:30 am to clean up trash and debris found around the beach. What a great way to enjoy some of our last warm days of summer!

What to expect:

Gather at our prearranged meeting spot at 10:00 am, then we'll comb the Bay View Beach or Oak Leaf Trail until 11:30 am. You are welcome to leave early if you have younger kids that won't last the full clean up time. Trash pickup has been coordinated with Milwaukee County Parks.

Capacity & Age Recommendations:

Open to all ages but must be able to walk for up to an hour on sand, grass, and pavement without limitations or restrictions. We have unlimited capacity so this project will be open to guests right away.

What to bring:

Bring gardening gloves (if preferred over exam gloves that will be provided) and consider bringing a water bottle is the weather is hot.

Each volunteer will need to fill out a Milwaukee County Parks Volunteer Agreement HERE. (This only takes <5min, type in Sunbeam Kids Inc. for the affiliated group). FYI - Sunbeam Kids Inc. does not retain these forms, they get submitted directly to Milwaukee County Parks.

What to wear:

Wear outdoor, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes. We strongly recommend closed toe shoes as Bay View Beach is quite rocky and there may be broken glass.

Location/Parking info:

Park on Lake Drive, about 1/4 mi south of Oklahoma Avenue. There is a large complex called Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi (address for this complex is 3221 S Lake Dr, St Francis, WI 53235). We will meet at the Bay View Beach park sign across from the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi complex and walk down to the beach together.

Additional information:

If there is light drizzling rain, we will still plan on doing the cleanup. If severe weather is forecasted, you will be sent a cancellation message via text/email the morning of the event.
Some gloves, buckets, grabbers, and trash bags will be provided courtesy of Keeping Greater Milwaukee Beautiful, however you are welcome to bring your own gloves and grabbers if you wish.
Note: No bathroom is available, so feel free to leave the event early as necessary.
Volunteers are not allowed to collect needles, sharps, or otherwise hazardous objects. If found, these items should be reported to staff.

Fall Decoration Making for Kathy's House

Overview:

Kathy’s House is a hospital guest house committed to providing affordable lodging and caring support in a “home away from home” environment for families who need to travel to Milwaukee for medical care. There are 38 guest rooms for patients and families of patients to have a place to stay while receiving medical treatment in the greater Milwaukee area.

Join Sunbeam Kids on Sunday, September 20th from 2:00 to 3:00pm at the Wauwatosa Library to make fall themed decorations for Kathy's House.

What to expect:

One way to make Kathy’s House feel homier is to have homemade decorations for the doors of all guest rooms. In this project, we will meet at the Wauwatosa Library to make fall decorations for the doors.

Capacity & Age Recommendations:

All ages are welcome and we have open capacity for this project.

What to bring:

No need to bring any supplies- just some creativity! Kids can wear their Sunbeam Kids shirts and bring their name tag lanyards to collect a ribbon. Please bear in mind that clothes may get messy during painting!

COMING SOON - Frame Park Cleanup (09/27/2026)

Frame Park Cleanup

Overview:

The City of Waukesha Parks and Recreation department organizes public events and volunteer projects for the benefit of its citizens. One such event is Octoberfest! Sunbeam Kids families have the opportunity to help by cleaning up afterwards! We will be heading to Frame Park on Sunday, September 27th from 10:00-11:30 am to clean up trash. What a great way to enjoy some of our last warm days of summer!

What to expect:

We will meet at Frame Park near the amphitheater. The City will provide garbage bags and gloves.

Capacity & Age Recommendations:

Open to all ages. We have unlimited capacity so this project will be open to guests right away.

What to bring:

No need to bring anything.

COMING SOON - Serving Dinner at St. Vincent de Paul (Ages 8+) (10/13/2026)

Serving Dinner at St. Vincent DePaul (Ages 8+)

Overview:

St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Meal Program has provided hot and nutritious meals to children and adults in the Milwaukee community for the past 40 years. They operate two meal site locations in downtown Milwaukee where individuals can eat for free six nights a week.

Join us on Tuesday, October 13th from 4:30pm to 6:30pm to prepare and serve a meal to those visiting SVDP's Harambee meal site. We expect to wrap up around 6:30 pm.

What to expect:

We will begin by preparing the meal and getting ready for the guests to arrive. We will then serve dinner when guests arrive, followed by a quick clean up. Generally you can expect to be done with your volunteer duties by 6:30 p.m.

From SVDP: Each night we are open we do "Circle" all together in the dining room, this generally happens about 5:10 p.m. please try and attend that circle. You will be assigned your dinner duties there, meet all of the staff as well as your fellow volunteers & you will be given the opportunity to pray with our guests before the meal starts.

Capacity & age recommendations:

Ages 8+ are welcome to participate in this project. We have room for about 3 SBK families depending on the size of families that register (please use an accurate headcount in your registration for this reason).

What to bring:

No need to bring anything. Kids are welcome to wear their SBK t-shirts if they would like, otherwise just wear comfortable clothes for working in the kitchen and serving food.

SVDP dress code requires all volunteers to have their legs, feet and under arms covered. If you would rather not wear a hair net, please feel free to wear a ball cap or beanie that keeps your hair tucked into place. They also will require you wear an apron and will furnish you with a plastic disposable apron, if you would rather bring your own, that is wonderful.

COMING SOON - Diaper Duty Calls! Sorting at Milwaukee Diaper Mission (10/21/2026)

Diaper Duty Calls! Packing Orders at Milwaukee Diaper Mission & Diaper Collection

Overview:

Did you know... A third of families in Milwaukee struggle to afford enough diapers to keep their baby clean, dry, and healthy and 68% of families with children in Milwaukee qualify for low-income status, yet no state or federal government assistance programs (like SNAP and WIC) supplies these families with diapers. That is why Sunbeam Kids is thrilled to be partnering with Milwaukee Diaper Mission to spend time packing diaper and baby wipe orders in the warehouse on Wednesday, October 21 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.

What to expect:

Join other SBK families at the Milwaukee Diaper Mission warehouse in Cudahy to pack diaper orders, wrap diapers for future orders, and restock diapers on shelves.

Capacity & Age Recommendations:

All ages are welcome. We have space for approximately 4 families depending on the size of families that register - please use an accurate headcount in your registration for this reason.

What to wear & bring:

No need to bring anything to this project, but kids are welcome to wear their SBK shirts/lanyards if they are willing. Closed toe shoes are required since this project takes place in a warehouse.
