PAST PROJECTS
By sharing these projects we want to give you an idea about what you can expect from Sunbeam Kids, but also give you ideas if you'd like to Plan your Own Project for Your Scout Troop, Youth Group, Classroom or Birthday Party.
Mercy Mats -- with the help and direction of Mercy Mats West Allis, we sorted and prepped plastic shopping bags to be crocheted into sleeping mats for area homeless people. This group typically meets Wednesday at the West Allis library -- all are welcome! Check out their Facebook Page for details.
Together We Rise Skateboards for Foster Kids -- we purchased10 kits from Together We Rise to build skateboards (they also do bike kits and duffel bag kits) for foster kids in the area. Phase II Skateboard shop helped with their expertise and tools, and we were surrounded by a great crowd at the Tosa Skate Park.
Saint Vincent de Paul Dinner -- we join our friends at SVDP the first Saturday of every month to serve dinner and donate books to the kids attending.
Riverwest Food Pantry -- What a beautiful day to work in the garden! We also helped sort food on the shelves of the food pantry.
ACTS Housing Welcome Home Baskets -- With items donated from members and Sunbeam Kids we created welcome baskets for new homeowners working through the ACTS Housing program, which works to transform communities in Milwaukee.
Pet Pal Rice Sock Warmers -- We made "hot packs" for animals at the Humane Society who are recovering from surgery. The decorated the socks and got to meet Mika the service dog!
Kids in the Classroom -- Autism Awareness & Making Weighted Sensory Toys
Be Our Guest -- Making Dinner at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Wisconsin
Girls on the Run of Southeastern Wisconsin -- "Be Your Own Superhero" 5k race helpers
Can Tab Collection -- we brought together our can tabs with others in the community for Ronald McDonald House...we hope they beat their $18k day in '16. Let's start collecting for next year!
Supporting the Troops -- we taught the kids about our troops by honoring veterans, as well as making care packaging for the children of deployed soldiers, all with the help of the USO.
Walk In Someone Else's Shoes -- we collected 162 pairs of shoes, adding to the 200k+ that Stan's has collected in 10 years! The kids learned about empathy first had and packed the shoes.
Fans In the Stands for Special Olympics -- we made signs and then cheered on the Special Olympic athletes. The event was held at Homestead High School.
Stuff The Bus -- What a fun time at Pick 'N Save supporting the annual Feeding America and 99.1FM Stuff The Bus project by pre-packaging the bags people bought to help those in need.
Warming Hearts -- We met at Marquette University with our mitten and hat donations and made no-sew fleece scarves to complete the set. Then we had cookies and walked over to donate our gifts to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission so we could warm the hands and hearts of those in need.
Robyn's Nest, a program of Children's Hospital -- We sorted clothing, toys, shoes, books and hygiene products to help foster families and others in need shop for items (at no cost to them).
Grant Park Beach Cleanup -- What a beautiful day it was when we went to picnic area 5 and cleaned up the beach with the help of Earth Love Environmental and the Milwaukee County Parks. This was just a great hands on project, but disheartening how much trash we picked up in such a short time.
Lending A Paw -- We welcomed Custom Canines Service Dogs from Madison to help us understand how highly skilled dogs help enhance the lives of people with a variety of conditions and disabilities every day. We made them fleece dog toys and brought gift card donations to help them keep offering their services at no charge to the recipients of service dogs for autism, PTSD, guide dogs and more.
Birthday Party In A Bag Kits for Meta House -- made birthday bags with Elm Grove Junior Guild for mothers undergoing treatment at Meta House to surprise their kids on their birthdays! A win-win as we help the mothers and kids feel special on an important day.
Medical Supplies for Ghana -- donated and re-packed 283 lbs of supplies for a local team going on another medical mission to the Volta region of Ghana. We LOVED seeing pictures of a few children in Ghana wearing Sunbeam Kids t-shirts. It's awesome to see tangible evidence of our widespread impact!
Sandwich Makers --
made 185 sandwiches for the guests at The Guest House and had a tour to
learn how this organization helps homeless people get back on their
feet with dignity.
Race Crew -- cheered on runners and handed out apples at the Monster Run benefiting First Stage Theatre
"We Care" Packages -- made bags full of goodies for kids in the foster system to keep them busy while waiting for their court hearing (Kids Matter)
Blessings In A Backpack -- filled bags with local chapter to help feed kids over the weekend
Farming For Families In Need -- picked veggies for Hope Center at Green Power Garden
Make the Park Pretty -- planted flowers and painting new garbage cans at Center Street Park
Painting for a Pal at Arte -- painted a Rainbow Fish and each child decided where to donate
Easter Bunny Helpers -- filled baskets with Elm Grove Junior Guild for the C.A.R.E. Center
Back to School Buddies -- school supply drive for Kids Matter, Inc.
Lunch for Later - we pack about a hundred lunches to bring to Street Angels so they can hand out lunches to people experiencing homelessness.
Diaper Duty Calls! - Diaper and Wipes collection along with a group going to the Milwaukee Diaper Mission warehouse to learn about their work and help sort supplies.
River Cleanup - Working with Milwaukee Riverkeepers we help clean up shorelines to keep the waterways clean and beautiful.
