The week of February 14 is notable for Valentine’s Day, but there is another observation during this week that has special significance for anyone with a veteran family member receiving medical care. The National Salute To Veteran Patients happens the week of February 14th each year and pays tribute to patients that receive medical treatment in VA medical facilities each year.

Sunbeam Kids families can participate in the National Salute To Veteran Patients with an at-home project. Families will be coloring & decorating Valentine themed posters to be distributed at the Zablocki VA Medical Center! Staff of the Medical Center will hang the decorations during the National Salute To Veteran Patients week.

Sunbeam Kids, Inc. will put together supply kits, each containing enough supplies to make 3-5 posters. Families who sign up for the project will need to pick up their supply kit at a specific location in the greater Milwaukee area (Milwaukee, Franklin or Wauwatosa) starting January 30th, then color and decorate the enclosed posters. When the posters are complete, drop them back off at the same location by February 12th OR bring them directly to the Zablocki VA Medical Center no later than Sunday, February 13th.

National Salute To Veteran Patients will be observed Sunday, February 13 to Saturday, February 19, 2022. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, this week-long tribute to veteran patients has always been observed the week of Valentine’s Day and is intended to:

    • Pay tribute to veterans
    • Increase community awareness “of the role of the VA medical center”
    • Encourage visits to hospitalized veterans (during pre-pandemic times)
    • To encourage volunteerism with the VA

This week of observation is meant for some nine million veterans getting care in:

    • VA medical centers
    • VA outpatient clinics
    • Those receiving VA domiciliary care
    • Veterans in nursing homes
